How It All Began

Phinma, Inc. envisioned a company that will not only produce industrial paper in the Philippines, but at the same time, be a partner in nation building. Thus, the United Pulp & Paper Co., Inc. (UPPC) was born.

Incorporated in December 22, 1969, UPPC established its plant in Calumpit, Bulacan with only one paper machine.

At present, UPPC has two (2) paper machines with a combined annual capacity of 200,000 metric tons. It has a workforce of 383, spends P700 million annually in purchasing waste paper from local sources, spends P155 million in employee compensation and benefits and pays P180 million in local and national taxes.

Why Calumpit?

The site of the UPPC plant in Calumpit was chosen in consideration of following factors:

1. Proximity to the major source of raw materials
(In the early days of UPPC, sugar cane bagasse from PASUDECO in San Fernando, Pampanga was its major raw material)

2. Ease of transporting the major raw materials
(UPPC is along the PNR rail track which was connected to the rail system in PASUDECO).

3. Ease of transporting its finished goods
(UPPC plant is along the MacArthur Highway and near the Tabang gate of the North Luzon Expressway).

4. Proximity to a big stream of water
(UPPC plant is very near the Labangan River).

5. Availability of power supply
(UPPC can draw power from the Mexico substation of NPC Luzon Grid)

6. Calumpit has been and still is a peaceful place.

7. Skilled labor is not difficult to source in Bulacan.

8. Willingness of the community and the local government to host an industrial facility.

A Community Partner

As a responsible corporate citizen, UPPC strives to work hard for the preservation of the environment. At the same time, with the aid of the local government, UPPC has humbly contributed to the growth and development of the community through its participation in local developmental projects and other socio-civic activities.

Thus, UPPC will continue to remain in Calumpit not just as a provider of employment opportunities but more importantly, as a responsible neighbor and member of the community.
