Bulacan Business Leads Call For Responsible Environment Management

by Mara Bautista, BCCI

Seizing its role as chief advocate of the Bulacan business sector, the Bulacan Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized its first tree-planting activity under the "Trees for Life Project". BCCI adopted 500 mahogany seedlings that the group planted in a designated reforestation area in the hilltop barangay of Angat, Bulacan. A ceremonial pledging of commitment was held prior to the tree-planting last November 17, 2007.

The group of about 50 representatives from the different companies, was led by BCCI President Jun Rivera and other members of the Board of Directors. The activity was orchestrated by Vice-President for Advocacy Vic F. Mendoza with the assistance of the BCCI Secretariat.

VP for Advocacy Vic Mendoza happily noted that "this is our first concrete step towards the promotion of corporate social responsibility among our member-companies." He was equally elated that at least thirteen companies fully participated in the activity, who trouped from all corners of Bulacan. They include: 8 Waves Waterpark, Flavor Food Products International, Inc., Freeway Motor Sales of Baliwag Corp., Wella Metal Furniture, Corp., VFM Printmart, Double Happiness Bus Stop & Restaurant, Sta. Maria Business Association, Inc., Pacific Timber Export Corp., Lorcris Enterprises, Philippine Spring Water Resource, Inc., Guiguinto Printing Press, and Ruby Aquaculture, Inc.

"Nakakatuwa! The place is very beautiful, so clean and green. The weather was cool and the view from the top of the Angat River was so exhilarating, you won't feel tired," quipped some participants. The feeling of joy was so contaminating, especially at lunchtime where each company brought their own food to share with everyone. Secretariat Officer Nani Mallari expressed her awe when she learned that everyone had extra food to share. Nature's Spring provided free drinking water.

During the signing ceremony, the participating companies committed to nurture the 500 seedlings until maturity. Aside from this, BCCI further committed to take steps towards the sustainable preservation of the Angat Watershed Area and promote awareness on environment management to address the issue of global warning.
