13th North Luzon Area Business Conference: Unified Chambers in North Luzon for Prosperity

The local chambers in North Luzon voiced out the need to focus and synchronize the activities in the area along common objectives. This was the theme of the 13th North Luzon Area Business Conference: "Unified Chambers...for Prosperity", as it called for a united voice, stronger alliance, and convergence of actions, and efforts toward strengthened local enterprises for economic prosperity. The 21 chambers in the area, together with other local chambers in the Philippines belong to the umbrella of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Policy issues affecting the directions of the local business in North Luzon were presented in the form of resolutions. Among the issues presented were:
Preferential power rates in regions which play host to energy-generating facilities;
- Re-examination of the minimum wage law such that any increase in the future must be necessarily productivity-based;
- Development and promotion of a transparent, speedy and efficient system in the processing and issuance of business permits;
- Implementation of the A-ltemative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Act as an alternative mode of conflict resolution of commercial disputes among Chamber members to help unclog court dockets;
- Urging the government to adopt a comprehensive population management policy anchored on freedom of choice and leading to the development of health services infrastructure, improving reproductive health, nutrition, productivity and overall human development of Filipinos especially in the rural areas.
- Supporting the expansion of air services at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport and the Subic Bay International Airport.
The above-cited resolutions were presented to PCCI Area Vice-President for North Luzon Renato G. Simbulan, by PCCI Regional Governors Delfin Balajadia (CAR), Nelson Yuchiongtian (Region ]), Jaime Y. Tabbu (Region 2), and Romeo P. Yusi (Region 3). The Baguio-Benguet Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., led by its President Alfonso Lao hosted this year's Area Business Conference held at the Baguio Country Club last September 23-25,2004.
Aside from PCCI AVP Rene Simbulan, the Bulacan team which attended this year's conference included Chamber President Violy Luna, Directors Cora Ledesma, Fileng Cruz, Pedy Kalalang, Ariel Arceo, Alan Opao and Ruflna Agustin. Secretariat personnel included Donna Fernando and Ruth Caguingin.
