Beyond Business: PGMA and Mahathir Keynote the 30th Philippine Business Conference

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry mounted its most attended annual
business conference last October 5 7, 2004 at the Manila Hotel. Former Malaysian
Prime Minister Mahathir delivered the keynote address on the first day. Mahathir
is one of the world's most admired leaders and is credited for having turned Malaysia's
economy from being agriculture reliant to industrial-based, and at the same time
elevating Malaysia's position as the 17th biggest trading nation in the world.
Malaysia's recovery from the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 and 1998 remains a
world model for economic success. Supported by a long-term vision and complemented
by a roadmap to transformation, Malaysia is leading the way for the Southeast
Asian region to emerge as an important area for trade and development. Dr. Mahathir
expressed his concern on the continuing expansion of the gap between the rich
and the poor, which may lead to a situation ripe for revolution. He also I cited
the role of small and medium enterprises in a nation's economic development. While
governments are tasked to take primary responsibility for achieving peace and
I security, access to basic infrastructure, affordable housing, free quality education
and heath services, it is in the interest of business to be part of the solution
rather than being part of the problem.
Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo addressed the conference during the second day.
She presented a snap shot of her economic agenda and a preview of her 100-day
report.
The president congratulated the organization for bringing over Prime Minister
Mahathir and for elevating its mission to encompass matters "BEYOND BUSINESS",
as this would mean giving our country a competitive edge in the present global
economy. Beyond business is business leadership beyond the four corners of the
boardroom, beyond profit maximization, beyond global expansion. Beyond business
is business with a purpose - spearheading business growth and social equity through
focused business activities as lead advocates for transformation and change.
This year's PBC underscored the perennial challenges that confront the country's
drive for economic prosperity anchored on the significant role of the business
community as a stakeholder in empowering the private social sector as partners
in the achievement of sustainable and equitable development.
Other plenary speakers included DTI Secretary Cesar Purisima who discussed
"Combatting Poverty, Unleashing the Economic Potential of the Filipino",
and Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap who tackled "Food Security and Agriculture
Development Towards Rural Improvement."
Ten BCCI directors attended this year's conference. The BCCI also participated
in the Trade Fair and Exhibit which featured the Tatak Bulakenyo products: Oriental
Lime Juice by Shamna Manufacturing, Pork Chicharon and Pastillas de Leche by
RicMar Sweets, Chocolate-coated Polvoron by Godavari Food Products, Chocolate
Powder by Excellente and Decorative Vases by Northwing Exports.
